Administrative Assistant-Medical - Sapulpa

This course will provide students with general administrative support skills in addition to gaining knowledge and experience in medical office work. Utilizing computer software designed for the medical office, students will input patient information, schedule appointments, handle billing, and produce lists and reports required in a medical office. Students will process insurance claims, and handle patient information forms. Students will perform document production, filing, and records management.

Training will include medical office financial records, legal issues, and patient relations. Also included are medical office procedures, terminology, word processing, transcription and medical coding. Guest speakers from the medical profession and visits to medical offices will enhance the study. To gain on-the-job experience, students will intern (with or without pay) in a general or medical office approved by the instructor in lieu of attending class.

Career Majors in Administrative Assistant - Medical


Career Major: Medical Transcriptionist

This career major will provide students with a strong foundation for placement in the Medical Office using machine transcribers. Emphasis is on developing transcription skills from voice media into usable medical communication. Correct formatting of medical documents, medical definitions, and correct spelling of medical terminology are also emphasized.

Career Major: Medical Office Assistant

This career major will provide students with general administrative support skills in addition to gaining knowledge and experience in medical office work. The importance of complete accuracy and confidentiality in maintaining medical records will be stressed.

Some of the areas emphasized in this course will include administrative responsibilities, patient records, and advanced word processing. Utilizing computer software designed for the medical office, students will input patient information, schedule appointments, handle billing, and produce lists and reports required in a medical office. Students will obtain basic literacy to understand key computer concepts, applications, and the Internet. Students will perform medical document production, filing, and basic functions of processing medical insurance claims.

Career Major: Medical Insurance Coder

This career major introduces the basic principles and conventions of the International Classifications of Diseases (ICD) as well as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding. It stimulates the application of coding principles with examples and exercises based on actual case documentation.

Career Major: Administrative Medical Assistant

This career major includes Medical Office Assistant, Medical Transcription, and Medical Insurance Coder content. This will increase employment opportunities and knowledge of the administrative medical assistant tasks.

Earn college credit while attending Central Tech through our cooperative alliance agreement with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. College credit is awarded by appropriate higher education institutions through Articulation and/or Cooperative Alliance Agreements.
